Campo Maior
A town shaped by its fortifications
Campo Maior has a central landmark in its castle, which occupies the highest part of the town.
The castle’s elevated position
The castle overlooks the town and its surroundings; the former wall extended towards Porta da Vila, helping explain the layout of the historic centre.
Defence through different periods
The ensemble preserves the relationship between the castle and bastioned structures, revealing different building phases and changing ways of organising the defence of the settlement.
