Monforte
Monforte: oak woodland, streams and bridges
Monforte combines the town's houses and surviving walls with an open landscape of oak woodland, farmland and watercourses. The Ribeira Grande and its tributaries introduce denser corridors of vegetation, while old bridges and Torre de Palma add different layers of historic settlement.
The landscape between streams
Beside the Grande, Cubo and Freixo streams, holm oak woodland alternates with riverside vegetation, agricultural land and olive groves that accompany the local routes.
Bridges and ancient rural architecture
The bridge known as Romana crosses the Ribeira Grande, although its date is debated. Torre de Palma preserves remains of an agricultural estate from antiquity.
