Ourique
Ourique: changing landscapes and the Mira valley
Ourique lies between the Alentejo plain and the Algarve hills, crossed by the Mira and Sado rivers. Its landscape preserves traces of early farming and pastoral communities, particularly around the Cola circuit, where settlements and funerary monuments reveal different forms of occupation near the Mira.
The hill of Castro da Cola
The fortified settlement occupies a height near the Mira and Ribeira do Marchicão. The church of Nossa Senhora da Cola adds another historic presence nearby.
An extensive archaeological landscape
The circuit brings together sites from different periods around Cola. Water, mineral resources and farming activity help explain the long occupation of this particular landscape.
