Portel
Portel: from the castle town to hills and reservoirs
Portel combines a town defined by its castle with a territory extending across hills, plains and reservoir shores. Narrow streets and white houses contrast with the broad horizons seen from elevated villages and chapels that punctuate the hills throughout the municipality.
Houses and walls
Around the castle and in Vale Flores, narrow streets, white houses and large chimneys create a distinctive townscape, complemented by grander houses around the squares.
Views across the territory
São Bartolomeu do Outeiro and hilltop chapels reveal ridgelines, low ground and expanses of water, including the reservoirs of Alvito and Alqueva within the wider landscape.
