Porto
Porto: from the historic hillside to the Douro mouth
Porto combines the Douro waterfront with an elevated historic centre around the cathedral. The descent to Ribeira and the route towards Foz reveal two different relationships with water: buildings beside the river and the opening towards the Atlantic coast.
Cathedral and Ribeira
The cathedral occupies the old Pena Ventosa settlement. The connection to Ribeira reveals the change in level between the upper city and the Douro quays.
Granite and the riverfront
Traditional buildings and granite monuments define the historic centre. Beside the Douro, bridges and quays help reveal the urban continuity between the two riverbanks.
