Viana do Alentejo
Viana do Alentejo: a castle and pilgrimage routes
Viana do Alentejo combines a pottery tradition with monuments linked to the old routes between Évora, Beja and Alcácer do Sal. Its pentagonal castle marks the town, while the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Aires introduces the scale of a major pilgrimage destination.
An enclosure with five towers
The castle's plan connects five cylindrical towers and retains Manueline and Mudéjar decorative elements, forming a fortified ensemble integrated into the town's urban setting.
The sanctuary of Aires
The Baroque church has a Latin cross plan and one vaulted nave; the horseback pilgrimage connects the sanctuary with old routes leading from Moita.
