Viana do Castelo
Viana do Castelo: between the Lima, the sea and Santa Luzia
Viana do Castelo stands where the Lima estuary, Atlantic coast and Santa Luzia hill meet. The historic centre developed parallel to the river at the foot of the hill, making the transition between waterfront and rising ground particularly clear.
A centre beside the Lima
The old street layout retains traces of the medieval enclosure. Development parallel to the Lima riverbank is a defining feature of this historic urban core.
The Santa Luzia landmark
The hill overlooks the estuary, coastline and city. The basilica and ancient fortified settlement mark this elevated position above the surrounding landscape of Viana do Castelo.
