Vila Viçosa
Vila Viçosa: ducal heritage and a marble landscape
Vila Viçosa combines the monumental presence of its ducal palace with marble quarrying and processing. This stone links the quarry landscape to architecture and stonemasons' work. Bragança family heritage and industrial history offer two complementary ways to understand the municipality.
The ducal palace frontage
The palace's long façade developed from a Renaissance conception into a Mannerist expression; the building became a museum associated with Fundação da Casa de Bragança.
From quarry to architecture
Quarrying, processing and stone carving form part of local identity, documented by Museu do Mármore and by the use of this stone in buildings.
