Lisboa
Lisbon: hills and riverfront
Lisbon stretches along the right bank of the Tejo estuary, with neighbourhoods climbing the hills and a long relationship with the waterfront. The regular layout of the Baixa contrasts with the winding streets of older districts, creating clear differences in terrain and urban form.
The Baixa street pattern
Rebuilding after the 1755 earthquake gave the Baixa a regular, symmetrical layout opening towards the river, setting it apart from neighbourhoods spread across the hills.
Belém and the Tejo
Belém occupies the western waterfront on the way to the river mouth. Its gardens and monuments reflect the estuary setting and Lisbon’s maritime history.
