Sintra
Sintra: hillside town and Atlantic villages
The town of Sintra lies at the foot of the hills, where palaces, estates and gardens follow the terrain and vegetation. The municipality reaches the Atlantic coast. At Azenhas do Mar, houses above the cliff have a very different relationship with the ground from the hillside town.
Palaces on the slopes
The Palácio da Pena stands on one of the hilltops. Monserrate and the surrounding estates show how gardens and buildings are arranged across the slopes.
Azenhas do Mar and the cliff
Azenhas do Mar was built above a coastal cliff. At the valley’s foot, seawater pools sit beside a small beach whose sand cover changes with the tides.
