Palmela
Palmela: castle, hills and wine country
Palmela occupies a foothill of the Arrábida, with its castle overlooking the town and opening views across the region between the Sado and Tagus. Wine growing and archaeological sites in Serra do Louro complete a landscape where terrain and human settlement are closely connected.
The hilltop ensemble
The castle combines defensive structures with the former Santiago convent. Its elevated position explains its importance as a visual landmark within the surrounding territory.
Vines and traces in the hills
Wine growing marks Palmela's identity. In Serra do Louro, Chibanes and Alto da Queimada add archaeological evidence to the reading of the terrain and earlier settlement.
