Santarém
Santarém: from plateau to floodplain
The city of Santarém stands on a plateau above the Tejo and the agricultural floodplain. This change in elevation distinguishes the raised urban centre from the riverside areas. The municipality also extends through the Bairro landscape and limestone terrain associated with the Serra dos Candeeiros.
The upper city and river
The plateau overlooks the Tejo and the flat fields below. Routes between the city and riverbank reveal the contrast between slopes and the agricultural floodplain.
Several types of terrain
Beyond the alluvial plain, the municipality includes the Bairro plateau and parts of the Candeeiros limestone massif, with landscapes different from Santarém’s riverside setting.
