Silves
Silves: red stone above the Arade
Silves rises on a hill above the Arade, with its reddish castle defining the urban skyline. Narrow streets connect the upper town with squares and the river, while surrounding orange groves extend the historic relationship between the town and its fertile valley.
Sandstone and the skyline
The region's red sandstone shapes the image of the castle and former cathedral. Its colour contrasts with the white houses distributed down the hillside.
The river and old street pattern
The bridge over the Arade and historic street layout connect the town with former river communications. Gateways and squares mark different stages along that route.
